“I just spent a week in New York with my husband and son and thought you should know that because of your guide EVERY meal was fantastic. We only chose restaurants from your book and am convinced we never would have found them otherwise. You made our trip perfect...not one bad meal!”Lynne H.

eating off the clock

I have a dirty little secret … I'm not a huge lover of chocolate. It's not that I don't like chocolate, I do. But on the scale of things I lust to eat, it falls somewhere around chicken—happy enough to eat it, but it doesn't rock my culinary boat. Here's the kicker though, I find myself compulsively collecting chocolate. Every city I explore, every business that catches my fancy, I've got an eye out for the stuff and invariably I come home with a suitcase chock full of bars, nibs and truffles. Do I eat all this? Holy gut ache, no. I tend to nibble like a house mouse and leave the serious devouring to my husband and kid.

Though weekends in my world are usually jam-packed (daughter Lola's soccer matches, dog walks, trying to control the ever growing mess of my house), I always look forward to at least one night where my husband Kevin takes over the kitchen, uses every pot and pan in sight and creates something amazing.

Over the last few days here in Portland the temperature has plummeted and the mornings are frosty. This onset of winter is making me think a lot about bread.

You know you have something burning hot to say when you find yourself writing on the back of a napkin. So here I am scribbling down my thoughts about meat. In this era of thoughtful eating where more and more folks are veering away from animal proteins, I'm blown away by the number of eating establishments across the country that have embraced beast eating.

I'm sitting here in my hometown of Portland, Oregon looking out the window of my studio imagining a perfect rather day in PDX. I know I should be paying attention to the other work tasks that are piling up, but I'm telling myself this IS work since I eat and shop for a living.
