“I just spent a week in New York with my husband and son and thought you should know that because of your guide EVERY meal was fantastic. We only chose restaurants from your book and am convinced we never would have found them otherwise. You made our trip perfect...not one bad meal!”Lynne H.

oodles of noodles

Lord I was hungry yesterday afternoon. Not the tinkling hunger that's possible to push aside and ignore ... I'm talking about down on your knees, southern-baptist-gospel-praying-for-forgiveness-amen hungry. Thankfully the rest of the crew here in Singapore were also feeling the hunger pains! So at the end of the day we made our way out to the best hawker center in Singapore - Old Airport Road Hawker Center - and dug into hearty bowls of noodles.

I started out with a hearty bowl of big prawn mee noodles. While Dan dug into a heaping bowl of wan tan noodles from Cho Kee Noodles. My yellow noodles were soft and drenched in a rich, thick hearty gravy - just the way I like it. The prawn meat came out of the shell perfectly cooked and tender. Dan's noodles on the other hand were springy and tangy from the chili that Cho Kee uses. By the time we left Cho Kee had a line 15 people deep ... so shiok and popular!

Old Airport Road Hawker Center is famous for being one the best and certainly one of the largest hawker centers in Singapore. It's named because the old Singapore airport actually used to be located there. Nowadays those old buildings and hangars are mostly dormant, although every now and then the city will host some artsy event there. Thankfully the hawker center is now easily accessible via the new Circle Line MRT stop ... I can recall a time when it was much harder to reach, so there were less people and it felt more local. Fortunately, this increase in foot traffic hasn't had much of an effect on the overall atmosphere. It's still easy to chew the fat with an old uncle over bigboy Tiger beers.

If you're heading to Singapore, don't miss this hawker center. A few stalls not to miss would be:
1. Lao Ban Soya Beancurd - #01-127 (famous smooth beancurd dessert)
2. Mattar Road Seafood Barbecue - #01-63 (famous for seafood, chili crabs)
3. Nam Sing Hokkien Fried Mee - #01-32 (one of the most talked about fried hokkien noodles in Singapore)
4. Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow - #01-12 (fried kway teow ... if you're not sure what that is check out rather's earlier blogs)
5. Cho Kee Noodle - #01-04 (dan's favorite noodle joint)
